God calls upon us to work in order to provide for ourselves, our families, neighbours, and all those less fortunate. But first and foremost, He calls upon us to provide for the needs of our own souls! In talking to a fellow the other day about the possibility of enjoying retirement after working for most of his life, he informed me that his financial advisor assured him that he was set financially until he was 94 years old!!! In essence, his quality of life was protected for the next 30 some years of his old age. His physical well-being was being protected as much as one can make provisions.
Like most people, this man was focusing on the “here and now” and did not realize that his physical body was the home of a soul that was created in the image of God, to live forever. Life on planet Earth is just the beginning for each of us, as we have an eternity facing us. In the Scriptures, Jesus related what transpired between two men after their death. One of the men was rich and the other was a beggar named Lazarus.
“And it came to pass, that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom (Heaven). The rich man also died and was buried. And in Hell, he lifted up his eyes, being in torments and seeing Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.” Luke 16:22-24
The rich man was concerned only for the “here and now” and gave no serious thought concerning eternity. On the other hand, Lazarus came to realize that he had an eternal soul in his being and he turned over the protection of his soul to the Saviour of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ. This relationship became his treasure!!!
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupts and where thieves can break through and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupts, and where thieves do not break through and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
Jesus invites us to come to Him and He will protect our souls!
“Ho, everyone that thirsts, come to the waters and he that has no money come . . . .hearken diligently to Me . . . .and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear and come to Me: hear and your soul shall live.” Isaiah 55
